Filmbrain's Screen Capture Quiz: Round 17 - The Winners!
Though this was unquestionably the most difficult round in this quiz's four year (!!) history, there was still an impressive showing of entrants who managed to come up with ten or eleven out of twelve. One longtime player, however, has managed to come up with all twelve, and that's Mike F who might very well have the record for highest number of wins.
There are also two first-time winners, both who hail from across the pond, unsurprisingly. Luisa M and Frederic R also managed to identify all 12 Bretagne films. A hearty congratulation to the three of you. As always, any DVD used in the round is yours for the asking.
Be sure to check back next week for the start of (a themeless!) Round 18!
Update: Fernando was kind enough to remind me that I completely forgot to reveal the source of the final screen capture. It was of course Eric Rohmer's 1983 hit Pauline à la plage (Pauline at the Beach), a film that I'm afraid didn't add anything to the plus column of my Rohmer Yay-or-Nay chart. Amanda Langlat (she with the exposed butt crack) is wonderful, as is her story, but the other characters had me praying the Cloverfield monster would make an appearance.
I read through the many comments left on this post, and even when taking Glenn's points into consideration (i.e., the dippy twaddle, individuals talking themselves into corners, the rampant narcissism) I still found the characters insufferable, and their quasi-complicated sexual situations about as compelling as an episode of The Hills. (If that makes me a philistine, then so be it.) But I'm still not ready to give up on Rohmer, and I've just added half a dozen titles to my Netflix queue.

Wait, but what was the last film in the Round? I know I'll probably feel like a moron when you tell me, one of those, "Oh, shit, of course! How did I not get that one?" But I still need to know.

I'm sorry you didn't like Pauline on the Beach as it is one of my favorites. A lot of ppl like My Night at Maud's and the first one I saw was Chloe in the Afternoon which I liked a lot. Clarie's Knee was the second and I liked it a lot too. I've seen nearly all his films now (except his latest) and he is really awesome to me, but then I like talky films. Sign of Leo is one by him that is more like a normal movie and is his least talky film.

Hi,
I fell mysteriously in love with rohmer's film (4 seasons, and maud) when i first saw them.
I did not know i could enjoy these. But something was bugging me. And when i try to watch them again recently i understood: they make me sick.
The pretty face, the bourgeoisie, the eloquence, the sweetness, the intellectual 13 years old girls, the piano lessons. I wish all these characters where stuck in Godard's Week-end :)
But they're good movies, they're good movies ... there is something.
Great site btw, never dared to post ;)

For what it's worth, Filmbrain, I also happen to dislike Pauline à la Plage.
Hate? Not at all. Respectful of french butt cracks and long monologues damning the monologuer in question.
Dislike? Totally and resolutely. Never want to see it again in my tragically short-lived life.
So preach on, brother.
