My two week struggle with Synecdoche, New York -- trying to find the right way (and words) to write about the film -- is still far from over.I've made some headway, but still need a few days to create something that doesn't read like a therapy session.
In the interim, I've written a review of Laurent Cantet's The Class (Entre les Murs) for The Auteurs Notebook, the esteemed blog of the soon-to-be-formally-launched Auteurs website, an online streaming service with a decidedly cinephilic bent.
Cantet's unexpected Palme d'Or winner turned out to be one of my favorites of the NYFF, and quite a surprise given my lowered expectations as a result of the American critics from Cannes who compared the film unfavoribly to Season 4 of The Wire -- a specious comparison at best. You can read the whole review, Foucaultian (Foucauldian?) references and all, HERE.

Foucauldian. I believe.

This film has been a long time coming. I believe we have to wait till 2009 to see it here in Australia.
