From the moment I opened my eyes this morning, I've been hit with one problem after another -- personal, professional, financial etc. to the point where it's almost become farcical.By high noon I was at the peak of despondency, and I was seriously questioning whether a tiny DVD distribution business committed to quality can survive in a world where mediocrity holds sway. But then an email arrived from D-Kaz with a bit of news that managed to make it all disappear, if at least for a few moments: Night and Day (밤과 낮), the latest film from Hong Sang-soo will have its world premiere at this year's Berlinale, where it has been added to the competition lineup. This is Hong's first film shot outside of Korea, and I'm curious to see how his trademark male-female dynamics play out in Paris. Now back to the pain. |

Keep fighting the good fight, Filmbrain. I'm really looking forward to Quiet City and Dance Party USA.

Glad to hear I added a little spark to your day! In my glee in finding this information I completely forgot this wasn't shot in South Korea. Good luck with the Katz releases!

Hong's films must be really life-affirming and not at all escapist.

Wow thanks for the great news! :)
He shot here and I didn't even know about it...
It's not even a French co-production? What motivated his choice? I hope you'll investigate this case, if you're going to Berlin.
Meanwhile we are still waiting for a distributor to pick up Woman on the beach. His last film released in France was Tale of cinema back in 2005! I hope the Paris location will seal the deal a little faster for this one.

Oh no! It sounds as though your January is going the same way my December did. Let me offer this note of cheer: Months end.
Hang in there.

Wow, this is quite a surprise! I was checking Hong's profile on IMDB not too long ago and was sort of bum to see that he didn't have any projects in the pipe. Appears he does, though. Can't wait to see this!

awesome news fb. takes the sting out of the dismal box office for Woman on the Beach this past week. Cindi says that STILL LIFE made more in its first 3 days at IFC than Woman will probably make in its entire nationwide run. I love both films but personally I think WOMAN ON THE BEACH is the better film.
