Filmbrain's Screen Capture Quiz: Round 11, Week 8
| Fair enough dubarry โ Russian Natalie Wood is about as far from Puerto Rican as you can get, and, yes, Richard Beymer does indeed lack in the luster department, but nonetheless West Side Story still stands as one of the finest filmed musicals of all time. However, I can't help but wonder what the film would have been like had Wise's original choices been cast โ Elvis Presley and Audrey Hepburn. For some reason I just can't picture Ms. Golightly belting out I Feel Pretty. (But then again, perhaps Marni Nixon would dub her as well.) That's Tucker Smith as Ice in front of that Citizen Kane-ish political poster that's seen throughout the film. Smith, as I only recently learned, has a minor part as a dancer in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. (I believe he can be seen in the screen cap I used.) This week: from the sublime to the unbelievably ridiculous. Yes, I own this on DVD. Why, I'm not so sure. Blame the drugs. If you recognize the guy in white, you'll be able to name the film. Submit your answers to this address. Good luck! |

Me neither! I'm trying to figure out who the guy in white is, but keep getting distracted by the man in front with the moustache and big furry eyebrows!
And why are four people singing in one direction while the guy with the beard is at a 90 degree angle shouting into the face of one of the ladies?

He looks like Steven Prince; did someone make a musical out of Taxi Driver and not tell me?

In fact, Ashley, they did! On Saturday Night Live back in the mid-nineties. John Turturro played both Travis Bickle and Martin Scorsese. I searched YouTube for it, to no avail. I remember the songs being pretty spectacular...
Meanwhile, Filmbrain, I should have taken your advice on 300. What a painful ninety minutes.

boy boy crazy boy -- stay loose boy.
also didn't marni nixon sing for natalie wood? BUT choreography = flawless; rita moreno = fantastic. george chakiris = hoo ha. of course, the score is perfect.
i sang and danced obsessively to this soundtrack when i was in kindergarten and got into a ALOT of trouble spewing some epithets during recess. ALOT. who knew? i was 4. ah the good old days, when parents had NO idea what the hell their kids were reading, watching and listening to.

and while i'm here -- with respect to this new one: o no you dint. you know for anyone with a modicum of psychological insight these choices are very revealing.

From what I read, "Colonel" Parker wouldn't let Elvis star in West Side Story. Those crappy films Presley churned out were basically vehicles to sell soundtrack albums, which was where the real money was. I'm not sure how much better Presley would have been as Tony, but I would have loved to hear him sing the Sondheim-Bernstein songs. Audrey would have been too old to play Maria. Natalie was at least closer in age for the part.

I'm not a big fan of West Side Story (shoot me now).
"the man in front with the moustache and big furry eyebrows!"
That's Ron Jeremy.
Kidding.
