| Altman fans came out in droves for last week's quiz, which was, of course, the closing shot from his final film, A Prairie Home Companion. Special thanks to all of you who shared thoughts and personal anecdotes about the late director's films. I paid a visit tonight to a local independent video store, in hopes of renting a copy of Scoop, which I missed (well, avoided) in theaters earlier this year. As I entered the store, two Cobble Hill twenty-somethings were standing in front of the newly erected Altman section, having a bit of a pissing contest over how many of his film they'd seen. As I searched in vain for a copy of the second Allen-Johansson outing, I found myself gritting my teeth over comments like "The Gingerbread Man is his true masterpiece. This is auteurism in action! Nashville is far too populist to be taken seriously." It was when the conversation turned to the "sublime truths of Quintet" that I made a hasty, empty-handed retreat. This week -- Well, Thanksgiving may be over, but this giant inflated version of Simon Bar Sinister's nemesis will no doubt bring back memories to some. Name the film. Submit your answers to this address. Good luck! |

Those twenty-somethings have it all wrong! They should be belabored with steel wires for voicing such inept reasonings. Why, if it wasn't for them, you'd be sitting at home with laughing your head off. They denied you of your entertainment; you should go back there and show them who's who. Then burn their precious Altman section to the ground and laugh as they weep like little girls.

Well, Audrey, quite a few people insist I'm better off for not having rented Scoop.

Well, it's not bad. Woody Allen gives his best performance in a long time, but Scarlett Johansson is terrible and the filmmaking leaves much to be desired. But really, I'd say it's worth at least a look for Woody.
