| First off, sorry for the lack of posts in the past week. Filmbrain decided to take an unannounced end of summer break to prepare for what will no doubt be an extremely busy autumn. Other than an early screening of Pan's Labyrinth (more on that in a few days), the waning days of August were spent sleeping and watching episodes of Lost on DVD (the latter being a phenomenally pointless waste of time). The alt-text clue from last week's quiz led many of you to timorously submit Shampoo as your guess — and you were right! Hal Ashby's 1975 sexy social satire (with its magnificent Robert Towne screenplay) holds up remarkably well — that is, minus the hairstyles. As for the two actors pictured, that's veteran character actor Tony Bill on the left and producer George Justin on the right (his only other acting role was as Barney the barber in Chinatown.) Truth be told — I had to enlist the help of a pro to ID Justin. Thanks, Glenn. This week — scene from the madhouse? Name this minor masterpiece. Submit your answers to this address. Good luck! |

Wasn't that same Tony Bill very involved with the late lamented Jim Thompson towards the end of Thompson's life, trying to get something of Thompson's on screen? I dimly remember that from reading the big Jim biog a few years back.

I agree, LOST is a complete waste of time.

Thank you for disabusing me of the notion that watching Lost might be worthwhile!
