| Once again, Filmbrain's readers proved they know their Coens, for there wasn't a single incorrect guess for last week's quiz. Though it rarely tops anybody's list, 1994's The Hudsucker Proxy, a tribute to the classic Hollywood screwball comedy, is truly one of their funniest. The brothers wrote this one with Sam Raimi, who just happens to be one of the silhouetted brainstormers trying to find the perfect marketable name for the Shazameter. As for the Lenny Bruce reference, only three of you were able to spot it. The bar in which Tim Robbins meets beatnik barman Steve Buscemi ("Martinis are for squares, man") is called Ann's 440, a reference to the San Francisco nightclub that was the site of one of Bruce's earliest major performances, and the inspiration for his "cocksucker" piece that landed him in court. This week's quiz might be a bit too obvious, but it's late, and was the first thing to pop into Filmbrain's head. Submit your answers to this address. Good luck! |

Refreshing to hear someone recognize Hudsucker as one of the Coens' funniest. I can't believe it doesn't get much credit, while O Brother, one of their worst, gets lots of praise.

"The Hud" is the superior film six ways to Sunday, and yet there is an enormous "Lebowski" cult and nary a tremor across the zeitgeist about "Hudsucker"?
Is it because "Hudsucker" fans aren't the convention-going type?
