| Where else but in a Hal Hartley film would you expect to find a nun wrestling with a cop? Exactly....nowhere. Filmbrain has a real soft spot for Simple Men, primarily for it's homage to Bande à part's dance scene, set here to Sonic Youth's Kool Thing. But what happened to Long Island Hal? His post-2000 output has been tremendously disappointing, but perhaps the forthcoming sequel to Henry Fool (entitled Fay Grim) will find the director back in form. Here's hoping. This week -- a film with countless shots that would be ideal for a screen quiz. Narrowing it down to one was difficult, but here it is. Name the film. Submit your answers to this address. Good luck! |

I dunno, I rather liked "The Girl from Monday". So what if I'm the only one.

I sort of agree with Filmbrain. Girl From Monday was a minor Hartley at best -- but No Such Thing I felt was quite entertaining with a great performance from Robert John Burke, and was well, damn fine all around. I'm quite eager to see Fay Grim, even if it does center itself on Parker Posey's character (she can bug me sometimes). I love the IMDb's listing it as Genre: Action / Thriller. Perhaps this is part two of a trilogy -- the third being "Simon Grim"? And Hartley hooking up with Goldblum is something that was written in the stars long ago, glad to see it manifest.

The Girl From Monday was like Alphaville in Beta mode. Brimming with ideas, but not enough to craft a cohesive flick, for shame. Take me back to those early Ned Rifle days when every picture had an awkward dance sequence... it all soured a little after Sony butchered Amateur.

Jesus, I can't wait to see what film this belongs to. What a great cap.

You (and many others) will be quite surprised.

D'oh! I was totally gonna guess "Simple Men." Haven't seen it in years and wasn't sure. Gotta trust my instincts.
I don't know what the hell that screen capture is this week.
In response to the above commenter, I suspect "Fay Grim" will be part of a trilogy, but Simon already had "his" movie: "Henry Fool." The third one will probably concentrate on Fay's son. (Full disclosure: I'm the actor who played Simon Grim.)
Enjoying your blog which I discovered last week via Woolcot.

Wow James -- I'm honored.
Don't feel bad about this week's quiz -- only an alarmingly few have guessed it, though it's really quite a common film. Well, sort of.
By the way, saw you in Tom Paine last summer, which I thought was great.

Hey...can I name the flick here?

I think the idea is you don't name it here so as to allow everyone the pleasure of guessing until Filmbrain reveals the title next week.
BTW, Filmbrain, the pleasure is mine. Quite the excellent blog you've got here.
