| Filmbrain never imagined that that only about a dozen people would be able to correctly identify William Friedkin's 1971 classic, The French Connection. Even though Howard the chemist appears in only one scene, Filmbrain thought it would ring more bells than it did. Watching the thermometer rise as he's testing the quality of the heroin, he spouts lines like "We have liftoff!", "We're in orbit!", etc. According to IMDB, the actor, Patrick McDermott, is the boyfriend of Olivia Newton-John, and has been missing since June of this year, suspected dead. Ok -- this week's quiz comes from a film that absolutely everybody has seen. A university professor once told Filmbrain that this image is nothing more than phallus and vulva. (For that matter, she likened the whole film to a gang rape fantasy.) What do you think? Name the film. Submit your answers to this address. Good luck! |

Are you kidding? That screen capture alone is FILTHY. Anyone got a tissue?

A university professor referring to this film as a 'gang rape fantasy' just about neatly sums up everything that is wrong with academic film studies.
I mean - I'm not one to dismiss film theory out of hand, but that's just fucking ridiculous. I don't think even Laura Mulvey herself could make that arguement stick. Perhaps Andrea Dworkin? ;)

I must be completely and absolutely wrong about which film I thought this was. ^_^

For the record, Howard the chmist appears in two scenes in The French Connection: he tests the drugs at both Weinstock's apartment and at the exchange at the end of the film.
