| Once again, Filmbrain's readers have proven that they know their Lars. The first film in von Trier's "Golden Heart" trilogy, Breaking the Waves features a remarkable debut performance by Emily Watson as Bess, a naive, god-fearing Calvinist who sacrifices everything for love. (Well...sort of.) In what has now practically become a trademark for LvT, the film is broken up into chapters, though this time we get colorful title cards set to 70s-rock classics. The epilogue of the film (The Funeral) uses one of Filmbrain's all time favorites, David Bowie's Life on Mars. However, on the American video/DVD release, it's been replaced by Elton John's Your Song. Guesses of either song will be given bonus point credit. If you don't yet own the DVD, Filmbrain highly recommends the 2-disc Danish release, which contains not only the Bowie song, but is also the longer, uncensored version of the film. (The bonus disc has some great extras as well.) This week finds us at the halfway point in the round. The quizzes are meant to start getting more difficult at this point, but Filmbrain had little time to prepare for this week's capture, so this one will have to do. In what film will you find this cool guy, and what's that thing in front of his face? Submit your answers to this address. Good luck! |
