| Filmbrain's favorite film of 2004, and one that seems to have made an impression on many of you (judging by the record number of submissions last week), opens with a lizard climbing the wall of Tadanobu Asano's spotless Bangkok apartment -- of course this is Pen-Ek Ratanaruang's Last Life in the Universe. This week -- a 24 hour Hitchcock fest? Who would say no to that? In which film will you find this dream theater? And who's the blond in the doorway? Submit your answers to this address. Good luck! |

I don't know why, perhaps it's unreasonable, but I'm dead set against 'Last Life in the Universe'. I identified it in this quiz, I commented about it on your best of 2004 list, and as an avid Filmbrain reader I just can't settle my differences with that film. It just strikes me as ground-to-ceiling pretentious. If anything, it makes me appreciate the films of Wong Kar Wai more, which I had often wondered how much came from Doyle. However, after watching LLITU, it seems clear that even if most of the eye comes from Doyle, the soul comes from WKW. Last Life is a souless project in Pan-Asian marketing! Viva la revolution, etc!
