(Note: Filmbrain also accepted "The Gideons" as a correct answer -- it was a hotel bible after all. . .) Joel and Ethan Coen's 1991 Palme d'Or winner is Filmbrain's personal favorite of the brother's oeuvre, and one of the best films ever on the subject of writing. This week -- an opening shot. i saw barton fink the day i found out i got into harvard. they are inextricably linked in my mind. i could barely sit still through it. i love that scene where john goodman is charging down the hallway with shotgun: i'll show you the life of the mind . . . i use that line all the time.
