| Even though there is a wonderful Criterion release, only about a dozen of you knew that last week's quiz came from Shohei Imamura's The Pornographers. Though almost forty years old, this is a film that has not lost its ability to disturb, and the fact that it's meant to be a comedy only makes it worse. This is a must-see -- if you haven't, do so as soon as possible. Trust Filmbrain. Congrats to those of you that got it -- it was a tough one. For the curious, here's the international breakdown of correct guesses (at least as of this writing): Canada 4, Finland 2, France 1, Germany 1, Italy 2, and Japan 3. Sadly, Messieurs Hillis and Clayfield both let their respective nations down. This week: though it may seem like a random shot of a guy in the rain, the image below (or slight variations of it) appears several times throughout the film. Turn off your mind, relax, and let your subconscious do the work. Name the actor and the film. Send your answers to this address. Good luck! |

Dammit, I just saw The Pornographers really recently!
Good movie, I think...the transition it made between slightly messed up comedy to Jodorowsky-level weirdness is certainly something I'll never forget. Especially since the local Japanese Film Association had compared it to Ozu beforehand...

i love imamura's work, but i found "the pornographers" to be really film-school. Maybe i was in a bad mood, but the editing, the shooting, the writing; it all seemed too forced and it just smelled like it was trying too hard. i dunno. maybe i should revisit it. love your site!
