Filmbrain had to pause when he read the following:
"Al Gore encourages people to see The Day After Tomorrow."
Let's get this straight -- Al Gore, environmentalist and all-around smart guy is encouraging people to see a Roland Emmerich film? The man who brought us such cinematic treasures as Godzilla, The Patriot, and Independence Day?
Filmbrain is all about getting behind environmental causes. He believes that more people should be aware of the shameful record of the Bush administration on environmental issues, and that Dick Cheney's absolute dismissal of global warming as a threat is cause for concern. However, suggesting that people should go see a $100+ million disaster film as a means of learning about global warming is incredibly stupid.
Emmerich is hardly a 'message' guy. He just likes to destroy things. Plot? Pshaw! Those are just those quiet moments to prepare you for the next onslaught of disaster. Emmerich has taught us things -- for example, all you need to defeat invading alien spaceships is Jeff Goldblum and a Powerbook. (Tap, tap, tap..."We're in!" -- This is when Filmbrain walked out of the cinema.) In The Day After Tomorrow the hero this time is Dennis Quaid, who will no doubt reverse the effects of the three-day ice age with nothing more than a hammer, some rope, and ordinary household bleach.
Filmbrain has a better idea -- take the $10 you were going to spend on a ticket and consider donating it to Greenpeace or one of the organizations listed here.
