Comedian/actor Alan King died Sunday of lung cancer. He was 76. Born Irwin Alan Kniberg in Brooklyn, King made it big in the 50's and 60's with his numerous appearances on the Ed Sullivan show. He acted in 30 films, from Hit the Deck in 1955 to Mind the Gap from this year.
Filmbrain enjoyed his performance in Martin Scorsese's Casino as union leader Andy Stone. In the scene pictured above, he utters the following to Robert DeNiro:
"The old man said, 'maybe your friend should give in'. And when the old man says maybe, it's like a papal bull. Not only should you quit, you should run."

I loved Allen King because he was a man that really cared. I remember how he helped Lena Horn with her career once she retired. He befriended her at a time when a friend was need.
May Mr. King's family be comforted by his goodness, as I know it.
A Fan,
