It's been virtually impossible to open up a paper or magazine lately without some sort of take on The Passion of the Christ. This is one of the more interesting ones, from, of all places, The Financial Times.
Gibson's horrible film, by doing its very best to overlook entirely the spirituality at the heart of the Christian story and focusing in gruesome detail on its carnality, tries to square the circle. A serious religious film that nevertheless needs some serious hyping. One only has to look at the absurd publicity notes distributed in press screenings.
